Events to look out for in Malta
By Georgia H. Carpenter
The Republic of Malta, or Malta for short, is a southern European archipelago and country that sits just about in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea. The fact that it only takes up around 300km2 of land means it is one of the smallest and most densely populated countries on the planet. For its size, however, it has much to offer. What follows is a quick look at the most exciting annual events in Malta.
Even the most uninteresting of spaces can be brought to life with the addition of candles. And the quaint little harbour in Birgu is beautiful normally, so when it is lit up by thousands of candles for Birgufest it transforms to a magical reality. The things on offer there include historical re-enactments, music, excellent food, and many other attractions. An evening here is sure to be steeped in atmosphere, and very memorable.
The International Fair of Malta is an excellent place to learn about potential purchases, or just seek out some specialist knowledge in an area of interest. There are so many trade fairs being put on all the time so there is bound to be one you are interested in, whether it be bird shows, or interior design. These shows are incredibly popular amongst locals and tourists, which says a lot for their quality.
Once a year the Island of Malta becomes the Isle of MTV, where huge names in the music business, and new and exciting talent, gather together to put on one on the largest free open air concert in Europe. This is held in the Granaries in Floriana.
So we have seen that Malta can cater for atmosphere, for listening pleasure as well as something for the mind; but can it cater for visual pleasure? The answer to that is a resounding yes, as each year it is host to an international fireworks festival. It does exactly what it says on the tin, but expect some of the most magnificent arrangements you have ever seen. As should be clear by now, Malta has a hell of a lot to offer, and this list was far from exhaustive.
